Baalbeck, The Sun That Shines Its Light Around the World
When speaking about Baalbeck, one cannot merely consider it an ancient city with remarkable tourist, cultural and human attractions. Baalbeck, the City of the Sun, has been the cradle of history and civilization for more than 11,000 years. A surge of civilizations and cultures has passed through the city throughout the ages, making it a beacon that illuminates the present and future of Eastern history. From its temples and monuments to its people and culture, Baalbeck never ceased to astonish the world with its perseverance and its ability to regenerate and face all obstacles, and rise up as a Phoenician bird through any circumstance that might interfere with its path. Day after day, Baalbeck shines more and more through the achievements of its residents and expatriates, its mayor and municipal council.
Today, the city of Baalbeck raises its head as the European Alpine alcove after Mr. Nidal Solh, the media professional and mountain climber, raised the Lebanese flag and that of the Lebanese army at the peak of the Alpine chain. Through this pioneering achievement, Mr. Nidal clearly demonstrated the Lebanese ability to face challenges, make efforts and not surrender until reaching the desired goal. The son of Baalbeck proves once again that the Lebanese remains a successful determined fighter wherever he is around the world.
On another note, Rola Maksoud, a lady of Lebanese origin who emigrated to the United States of America, returned to her homeland and her birthplace, to realize her dream. Rola took the stage in Baalbeck and sang with an angelic voice that mesmerized listeners. Her singing was inspired by the beauty of Baalbeck’s fortress, glittering in the sun like a golden palace. She sang Fairouz’s song "Behabak Ya Lebnan", expressing through her talent, her love for her homeland. This simple initiative by Rola Maksoud proves, in my belief, that Lebanon still lives in the heart of the Lebanese who have emigrated and still long for their country, cities and villages and want to return to it. At the same time, we see an influx of people visiting the city of Baalbeck and marveling at its beauty, cleanliness of roads and safety and its majestic and unique citadel.
Gratitude goes to Baalbeck Governor Bachir Khodr, who played a major role before the start of the tourist season when he met with political and diplomatic dignitaries to reassure tourists and embassies that Baalbeck is a safe city that is ready for tourists. The Governor has made every effort to support the tourist season and to ensure the security and well-being of the city. These efforts are clearly translated into reality by the reactions of tourists and visitors.
The same is true of the Mayor of Baalbeck, Mr. Fouad Balouk, who has also made every effort to ensure that municipal work is proceeding in full swing, providing the necessary elements for a prosperous tourist season thanks to the Lebanese army and the municipal team. Not only that, Mr. Fouad will represent Baalbeck and Lebanon in a number of regional and international meetings and seminars and insists on using the Arabic language in all these seminars. This remarkable stance shows his patriotism and conviction in his language and heritage, even though the Lebanese people are multilingual.
Throughout history, the people of Baalbeck have stood up to all the challenges they have faced and remain as bright as the sun's temple. They welcomed tourists and visitors with the friendliness, hospitality, and originality of which the Bekaa and Baalbeck are best known for. These values and attributes will never change; for the people of Baalbeck, this is the real steadfastness.
